Fourteen steps
The tower has fourteen commands in sequence. Hit one and you climb a step; miss and you lose progress. First to complete all fourteen wins.
Everyone gets the same sequence and climbs at the same time, each on their own tower. You can see how high the others are throughout, which is part of the pressure.
The tension is in the penalty
Because a miss sends you back instead of simply not advancing, there is an optimal speed and it is not 'as fast as possible'. Climbing at a pace where you hit 100% beats climbing twice as fast and missing one in four.
And mistakes tend to arrive in series: losing progress creates hurry, hurry creates mistakes. The most reliable recovery is to deliberately slow down for two or three commands after a fall — which is exactly the opposite of what your body wants to do while someone is overtaking you.
What the commands are
There are seven possible commands: the four directions, plus plus, minus and space. The whole sequence is drawn at the start of the match — the same for everyone, so nobody gets an easier climb than their neighbour.
The three that are not directions are exactly the ones that break your rhythm: your hand is already set for the arrows, and finding plus in the middle of a fast sequence is where most mistakes happen. The current command and the next ones stay visible, so this is not memory — it is execution under pressure, which is a different skill.
Your progress lives on the character
Each player's counter is a ring around their character on the scoreboard, closing as the climb advances. This was the first game on the site to use that format — today it is standard for any count that runs from zero to a target.
