🏓 Pong

The classic of classics, and the most complex game here under the hood. Two modes, up to four players, and the ball speeds up while the rally lasts.

Play Pong now

The rules you already know

A paddle on each side, a ball in the middle, and it accelerates as the rally goes on. Let it past and the other player scores.

Up to four players fit here: with three or four the arena becomes square and gains paddles on the other sides — the ball can come from any direction. With exactly three, the fourth wall is solid, with no paddle.

Two modes, and the limit is set in the room

The limit is 3, 5 or 10 (default: 5) and applies to both modes — in points it is how much you score to win, in lives it is how many you have. The host sets it on the room screen.

Lives mode changes a four-player match quite a bit: in points, staying out of the action is neutral; in lives, surviving is already progress, and you can win by being the quietest player in the arena.

Where the skill is

Because the ball accelerates within the rally itself, a long exchange is the most dangerous one for both sides — the longer the point lasts, the less reaction time is left.

And the exit angle depends on where on the paddle the ball lands. Returning with the tip sends the ball out on a tight diagonal, which is the most reliable way to win a point against someone well positioned. Returning with the middle sends it back straight and safe — and safe, in a game that accelerates, is a decision, not cowardice.

A technical note, because this is the odd one out

In almost every game here the server owns the truth. Pong is the exception: the ball physics run in your browser, at 60 frames per second, and the server is the authority at the moments that matter — bounce, score and synchronisation.

The reason is response time. A ball that only moves when a packet arrives feels heavy, and in a game that is pure reflex that is the difference between fun and irritating. The cost is that a tampered client can cheat at Pong more than at the others; for a free casual game that was a consciously accepted price.

Against the bot

The Pong bot tracks the ball with high precision — it is one of the toughest opponents on the site, and it is on the list of things to improve precisely because it ought to make more mistakes, with delay and imprecision instead of perfect reading.
