The problem with tic-tac-toe

Played correctly by two people, tic-tac-toe always ends in a draw. That is a mathematical fact, not an opinion — and it is why it is a game for six-year-olds rather than for adults.

So here it has two modes, and the second exists to fix exactly that.

Classic mode

A 3×3 grid, players alternate, three in a row wins. It draws a lot — and that is the point of playing it in thirty seconds between two rounds of something else.

Infinite mode

Each player can only have three marks on the board. Placing a fourth makes the oldest one disappear — and it blinks before it goes, so you can see it coming.

That changes the game completely. There are no draws: the board never fills up. And a decision appears that the classic version does not have — building a line that depends on a mark about to evaporate achieves nothing, so you have to track the age of your own pieces while attacking.

Same board, entirely different game.

Which mode to pick

Classic is for a thirty-second game between rounds of something else, or for playing with a small child — it is predictable by design and there is nothing wrong with that.

Infinite is the mode for playing seriously against someone at your level. Since draws do not exist, somebody always blinks first — and the typical mistake is a nice one: you build a perfect trap and it evaporates one turn before closing, because the piece holding it up was the oldest.

Where to choose
