Three seconds to look, twelve to draw
A 5×5 grid lights between 6 and 12 cells and disappears after just over three seconds. You then have twelve seconds to mark, on your own grid, the cells that were lit.
There are four rounds, and points accumulate.
Scoring rewards what you did NOT mark
Each of the 25 cells is worth one point if it is correct — lit when it was lit, and unlit when it was unlit.
That changes the strategy completely. Marking everything does not give you 25 points: it gives you only the number of cells that were actually lit, and zeroes the rest. Marking nothing gives you the 13 to 19 points of the unlit ones. The game punishes excess and shortfall equally, which is why 'I remember about five and I will leave the rest blank' usually scores better than filling in guesses.
How to memorise 5×5 in three seconds
- Nobody memorises 25 cells. You memorise shapes: an L in the corner, a diagonal, an isolated pair.
- Counting how many lit up helps calibrate how many to mark — and the number is always between 6 and 12.
- Edges and corners are easier to fix than the middle. Start there.
Against the bot
The bot gets about 86% of cells right regardless of the pattern — meaning it misses three or four per round, always. It is a ruler of an opponent: predictable, but good enough to punish a round where you only guessed.
